Homeopathy in Mexico

Homeopathy in Mexico has a rich history and remains a significant part of the country’s medical landscape. Homeopathy entered Mexico between 1849 and 1856, with Dr. Ramón Comellas, a Catalan physician, credited as a pioneer for publishing the first homeopathic manual in Mexico, Review on Homeopathy Dedicated to Mexicans (1850). The first homeopathic pharmacy was established in 1867 by Julián González, followed by the Homeopathic Society of Mexico in 1861, which published La Gaceta, the first Mexican homeopathy journal.Homeopathy gained formal recognition in 1895 under President Porfirio Díaz, who, after benefiting from homeopathic treatment for a chronic illness, issued a decree establishing the National School of Medicine and Homeopathy (Escuela Nacional de Medicina y Homeopatía, ENMH) and the National Homeopathic Hospital.

Homeopathy is taught to medical doctors in several schools including, Homeopatía de México A.C. by Dr. Proceso Sánchez Ortega and others.

Today, approximately 7,000 homeopaths practice in Mexico, driven by increasing demand and perceived effectiveness. The National Homeopathic Hospital, now part of the Ministry of Health, and the ENMH, under the National Polytechnic Institute, continue to operate, with the latter training over 4,000 students and serving 40,000 patients annually.
